Scottsdale can be "loosely" divided into multiple areas, usually:

• North Scottsdale -- North of Shea Rd generally considered "newer" Scottsdale as development has pushed North.  North Scottsdale reaches all the way up to Black Mountain where it meets Cave Creek & Carefree.  Many beautiful luxury home subdivisions can be found in North Scottsdale
• South Scottsdale -- McKellips to Thomas -- this area is bustling with activity, much more-so than the more laid back feel to North Scottsdale as it sits closer to town.
• Pinnacle Peak -- This is the area encompassing mostly Northeast Scottsdale and is a luxury destination featuring gorgeous homes, gated subdivisions, and unparalleled views!
• Scottsdale (Central)  -- This is also known as the Shea Corridor and stretches from Chaparral to Shea.  It features subdivisions such as Gainey Ranch, McCormick Ranch, and has an area referred to as the "Resort Corridor" due to all the resorts along Scottsdale Rd.
• Old Town Scottsdale -- Old Town has lots of activity and features small streets & stores with an old western feel, lots of restaurants, the Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall, and comes alive at night with clubs & bars.
